Red Oak bottle stopper blanks 1-1/2" square x 5" (38 mm x 38 mm x 127 mm) - product of Canada

Turn bold, practical projects with these red oak bottle stopper blanks. Known for its strength and prominent open grain, red oak is a reliable hardwood that machines easily and adds a classic, textured look to your finished pieces. It turns cleanly on the lathe and takes finish well, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced turners. These can also be cut for ring blanks. Product of Canada.

What size are the blanks?

Each blank measures a minimum of 1-1/2" square by 2-1/2" (38 mm x 38 mm x 127 mm), the ideal size for most bottle stopper hardware. This size provides plenty of material for drilling, shaping, and refining the final profile of your stopper.

Your blanks will be selected at random and may vary in colour, figure, and pattern.

How should I finish this blank?

Red oak’s open grain responds well to a variety of finishes. After sanding through your usual grits, you can apply oil, wax, or a friction polish depending on your desired look. For a smoother, higher-gloss finish, consider using a grain filler before applying your topcoat, then sand to finer grits and polish to enhance depth and clarity.

Fun facts about red oak:

  • Red oak has a very open pore structure, which is why it readily absorbs stains and finishes, making it a popular choice in furniture and cabinetry.
  • Despite its strength, red oak is not as moisture-resistant as white oak, which is why it’s typically used for indoor projects rather than outdoor applications.
