Turn bold, eye-catching turning projects with these Sapele mahogany bottle stopper blanks. Known for its warm reddish-brown tones and interlocked grain, sapele is a durable hardwood that works well on the lathe and finishes to a smooth, lustrous surface. These can also be cut for ring blanks!
What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures a minimum of 1-1/2" square by 2-1/2" (38 mm x 38 mm x 127 mm), the ideal size for most bottle stopper hardware. This size provides plenty of material for drilling, shaping, and refining the final profile of your stopper.
Your blanks will be selected at random and may vary in colour, figure, and pattern.
How should I finish this blank?
Sapele finishes beautifully with a wide range of products. After sanding through your usual grits, you can apply an oil, wax, or friction polish depending on your desired look. For a higher-gloss finish, sanding to finer grits and polishing will enhance the natural depth and chatoyance of the wood.
Fun facts about sapele:
Sapele is related to mahogany and is often used as a sustainable alternative in fine furniture, guitars, and luxury car interiors.
When quartersawn, sapele can display a striking ribbon-like figure that shimmers under finish.
