Tool bar and pointed carbide detail cutter by Kilian Tools – made in Canada, turn your own handle

A turning project that becomes a dependable shop tool and it's all made right here in Canada!

Add precision detailing capability to your lathe setup with this tool bar with pointed carbide detail cutter by Kilian Tools (handle not included - you turn your own!). Designed and made in Canada, this tool bar is built for fine work, crisp lines, and small-scale turning projects where control matters most.

The pointed triangular Nanograin carbide cutter features a 30° bevel, making it ideal for tight spaces, sharp transitions, and delicate detailing. Whether you're refining beads, cleaning up coves, or adding definition to small boxes, ornaments, or pen-related projects, this cutter delivers clean, controlled results.

This bar is also compatible with EWT-7400 Ci4 diamond carbide cutter by Easy Wood Tools.

What is included and what are the bar and cutter specifications?

  • 1x 3/8" (9.5 mm) Grade 304 stainless steel shaft
  • 1x 16.5 mm L x 10.5 mm W (0.65" x 0.41") triangular Nanograin carbide cutter with 30° bevel
  • 1x 4-40 x 5/16" screw with hex wrench
  • Overall length: 11" (8" shaft + 3" tang); overall weight: 1/2 lb

The 3/8" shafts are machined from Grade 304 stainless steel, with corners milled to fit securely into a handle drilled to 1/2" x 3" — the size of the tang. Each bar is CNC-machined to precisely fit the individual Nanograin carbide cutter for solid, accurate performance.

Does this tool include a handle?

No — and that’s part of the fun! This tool includes the steel shaft, pointed triangular cutter, screw, and hex key. The handle is not included, allowing you to turn your own custom handle to suit your grip and turning style. We recommend starting with a handle blank approximately 2" square by 12" long so you can shape it to your own comfort and specifications. It’s a rewarding turning project that becomes a dependable shop tool.

How do I turn the handle?

The tool bars fit into a ½” diameter x 3" deep hole. At this size, the bar should be epoxied in to make sure it’s solid. Optionally, drilling 1/64” undersized at 31/64” makes for a snug friction fit with no glue required.

The ferrules fit onto a 0.85” diameter x ½” long tenon on the end of the handle, although turning and trial fitting for a tight fit is recommended. A bit of epoxy or cyanoacrylate glue helps to lock them in place.

What is this tool best suited for?

This cutter is designed for detailing and excels on smaller projects where precision and finesse are key. The pointed geometry allows for crisp lines and access into tighter areas than larger-radius cutters.

Safe use of woodturning tools

As with all woodturning tools, these Nanograin carbide cutters will provide years of service if treated with care and respect.

We recommend cutting at or slightly above centre; cutting below centre can cause the tool to become overly aggressive. Avoid sharp impacts, as carbide inserts can fracture if struck. Always wear a dust mask, safety glasses, and a face shield when turning. Keep loose clothing, hair, and gloves well clear of the work area.
