Ash spindle turning blanks – 2" square by 12" – product of Canada

Ash is a dependable, versatile hardwood known for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, smooth texture, and bold, open grain. Under a clear finish, the grain pattern really comes alive, adding contrast and character to your finished piece.

It’s an easy-turning wood that cuts cleanly, holds crisp details, and sands to a smooth surface — making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced turners. Whether you’re shaping beads, coves, or long flowing profiles, ash responds predictably on the lathe.

What are the dimensions of these blanks?

Each blank measures approximately 2" square by 12" long. This longer spindle format gives you plenty of material for shaping and refining your design. The photo is a typical representation only. Your blanks will be selected at random and may vary slightly in grain pattern and colour.

The wood is skip planed, meaning only the high points have been lightly planed, leaving a natural, textured surface that’s ideal for turning.

What projects can I make with these blanks?

These blanks are ideal for smaller salt and pepper mill grinders, salt and pepper shakers, and other mid-sized spindle projects that require added strength and substance. The 2" square profile offers extra shaping freedom while remaining manageable on most lathes. They’re also well-suited for tool handles, shop accessories, and decorative spindle work.

Fun facts about ash

  • Ash is the same hardwood traditionally used to make baseball bats, tool handles, and hockey sticks because of its strength and shock resistance.
  • Its open grain structure makes it an excellent choice for dyeing or staining — it absorbs colour evenly while maintaining its natural texture and grain definition.
