Walnut is a milk chocolate brown wood that comes from the Eastern Canada and United States. It can sometimes be a light pale colour and develop a subtle purple hue. It has a medium texture with a moderately straight grain. It is massively popular amongst woodworkers and incredibly cooperative for turning and finishing.

What are the dimensions of this block?

This spindle blank measures approximately 2" square by 12" long, giving you plenty of material for a wide range of turning projects. The wood is skip planed, meaning only the high points have been lightly planed, leaving a natural, textured surface that’s ideal for turning. Each blank is selected at random and may vary slightly from the image shown.

What kind of projects can I make with this spindle blank?

Ideal for bottle stoppers, pizza cutter and ice cream scoop handles, and some styles of pepper grinders.

Fun facts about Walnut:

Walnut was historically prized by early North American furniture makers for its beauty and workability, and it even served as a material for the first wooden baseball bats.
Walnut trees are natural weed fighters. Black walnut trees produce a chemical called juglone that suppresses the growth of many nearby plants. It’s nature’s version of “don’t crowd me,” and one reason walnut trees often stand alone.
