Create bold, richly figured small turning projects with these stabilized curly redwood pen blanks. Featuring flowing curl and warm reddish tones, curly redwood offers striking visual movement and depth—especially when finished to a high gloss. These larger-format blanks are well suited to projects where extra material and visual impact matter.
What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures a minimum of 1" × 1" × 5", providing generous material for shaping and detailing. This size makes them ideal for projects such as lighter key rings, pill holder key rings, bottle openers, and other small turning projects that benefit from added thickness.
The blank shown in the photo has been sanded to highlight the figure and is representative only. Your blanks will be selected at random and may vary in colour, curl, and pattern. Colour variation is normal and expected, as differences in wood density affect how each blank absorbs resin. We do not offer refunds for colour variability or small internal imperfections. We also do not refund or replace blanks that become damaged during cutting, drilling, trimming, turning, finishing, or kit assembly.
What does “stabilized” mean?
Stabilized refers to wood that has been impregnated with resin under pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This creates a blank that drills cleanly, turns smoothly, and resists tear-out or blowouts. Each blank is unique and will be selected at random. Some colour variability is normal due to differences in wood density and how the resin is absorbed. We do not offer refunds for colour variation or minor internal imperfections, which are inherent to wood.
How should I finish this blank?
These blanks are easy to drill and turn. For best results, sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, followed by Micro Mesh. Use a cyanoacrylate glue finish followed by a plastic polish. Friction polishes like Doctor's Wood Shop, Mylands, Aussie Oil or Shellawax products will also give you a durable, high gloss finish.
Two fun facts about curly redwood:
Redwood is one of the softest woods commonly stabilized for turning, which is why stabilization dramatically improves its strength and usability.
Curly figure in redwood is relatively uncommon, making figured pieces especially prized for small, high-impact projects.
Price is per blank in Canadian dollars.
