Create elegant, flowing designs with these stabilized curly redwood pen blanks. Curly redwood is prized for its shimmering, wavy figure that shifts in the light, giving your finished pen a sense of movement and depth. Stabilization reinforces the wood, making it more durable and predictable to work with while preserving its natural beauty.
What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures a minimum of 3/4" square by 5" long (19 mm × 19 mm × 127 mm), making them suitable for most standard pen kits while still allowing enough material for shaping and trimming.
What does “curly” mean in wood?
“Curly” refers to a natural figure where the wood grain grows in a wavy or undulating pattern rather than straight. This causes light to reflect differently across the surface, creating a shimmering effect known as chatoyance. The result is a dynamic, three-dimensional look that becomes more pronounced under finish. Curly figure in redwood is relatively rare compared to straight-grained material, making these blanks especially desirable for decorative turning projects.
What does “stabilized” mean?
Stabilized wood has been impregnated with resin under vacuum and pressure, reinforcing softer or figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This creates a blank that drills cleanly, turns smoothly, and resists tear-out or blowouts. Each blank is unique and selected at random. Some variation in colour and figure is normal due to differences in how the resin is absorbed. We do not offer refunds for colour variation within a blank or for minor internal imperfections.
How should I finish these blanks?
These blanks are easy to drill and turn. For best results, sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, followed by Micro Mesh. Use a cyanoacrylate glue finish followed by a plastic polish like Novus or One-Step to achieve a smooth, durable, high-gloss shine.
