Sapele spindle project blank – 1-1/2" square by 12" (38 mm × 38 mm × 305 mm)

Bring rich colour and natural movement to your next project with this sapele spindle blank. Sourced from tropical Africa, sapele is a durable hardwood often used as a substitute for mahogany, offering similar warmth with added visual interest.

This wood features a deep red-brown, cappuccino tone and an interlocked grain that produces a subtle ribbon or wavy shimmer when finished. On the lathe, sapele turns cleanly and rewards sharp tools with a smooth surface and excellent chatoyance.

What size is this blank?

This spindle blank measures approximately 1-1/2" square by 12" long (38 mm × 38 mm × 305 mm).  Please note dimensions may vary ± 1/8" (± 3.2 mm). The picture is a typical representation. Your blanks will be selected at random and may differ slightly from the image. The wood is skip planed, meaning only the high points have been lightly planed, leaving a natural, textured surface that’s ideal for turning.

What can I make with this blank?

This size is ideal for a wide range of spindle turning projects, including tool handles, chair parts, pepper mills, and other decorative or functional items.

How does sapele turn and finish?

Sapele turns well with sharp tools and light cuts. Its interlocked grain can occasionally tear if tools are dull, so a clean cutting edge is important. Sand through your usual grits, then apply your preferred finish. Oils, waxes, and film finishes all highlight the wood’s natural shimmer and depth.

Two fun facts about sapele

  • Sapele belongs to the same botanical family as genuine mahogany, which is why it’s often used as a high-quality alternative in fine woodworking and instrument making.
  • When quarter sawn, sapele can display a striking ribbon stripe figure that shifts in the light — a natural effect prized in furniture and decorative veneers.
