Roasted Ash spindle turning blanks 2"  – product of Canada ♦ Beginner-friendly

Roasted Ash is heat-treated to enhance both its appearance and performance, transforming traditional ash into a rich, chocolate-brown wood with deep, uniform colour. The roasting process reduces internal moisture and increases dimensional stability, making it less prone to movement while turning. With its smooth texture and refined grain, Roasted Ash cuts cleanly on the lathe and finishes to a warm, polished surface that highlights its modern, upscale look.

What are the dimensions of this blank?

Each blank measures approximately 2" square × 12" (51 mm × 51 mm × 305 mm) long. The wood is skip planed, meaning only the high points have been lightly planed, leaving a natural, textured surface that’s ideal for turning. The photo shown is a typical representation. Your blanks will be selected at random and may differ slightly from the image shown — each piece of cherry has its own distinctive character.

What kind of projects can I make with a 2" spindle blank?

These blanks are well suited for salt and pepper mill grinders, shakers, tool handles, kitchen accessories, bottle stoppers, or pizza cutter and ice cream scoop handles, and decorative spindle work. The 2" square profile offers strength and shaping flexibility while remaining manageable on most lathes. These blanks are ideal for projects like

Fun facts about Roasted Ash:

  • The roasting process, also called thermal modification, uses heat and steam instead of chemicals to permanently darken the wood and improve its stability.
  • Roasted ash is often chosen as a sustainable alternative to darker tropical hardwoods, offering a similar look while using locally sourced Canadian wood.
