Walnut is a milk chocolate brown wood that comes from the Eastern Canada and United States. It can sometimes be a light pale colour and develop a subtle purple hue. It has a medium texture with a moderately straight grain. It is massively popular amongst woodworkers and incredibly cooperative for turning and finishing.
What are the dimensions of this block?
Each block measures approximately 3" square × 8" long, offering plenty of material for shorter peppermills or thicker handle projects. The wood is skip planed, meaning only the high points have been lightly planed, leaving a natural, textured surface that’s ideal for turning.
Each blank is selected at random and may vary slightly from the image shown.
Fun facts about Walnut:
Walnut was historically prized by early North American furniture makers for its beauty and workability, and it even served as a material for the first wooden baseball bats.
Walnut trees are natural weed fighters. Black walnut trees produce a chemical called juglone that suppresses the growth of many nearby plants. It’s nature’s version of “don’t crowd me,” and one reason walnut trees often stand alone.
