Make a bold statement with these Padauk pen blanks in a slightly slimmer size, perfect for refined pens and smaller turning projects. With its vivid colour and clean grain, Padauk stands out immediately on the lathe and in the finished piece.
Padauk is a vibrant tropical hardwood from Central and West Africa, sometimes called “Vermillion.” Freshly cut, it displays a bright pink-orange colour that gradually deepens into a rich red-brown over time. Its straight grain, medium texture, and durability make it a pleasure to turn while producing long-lasting, eye-catching results. It is known for its striking colour, stability, and ease of turning. It cuts cleanly with sharp tools, holds detail well, and its natural colour provides a bold finish without the need for dyes or stains.
What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures approximately 5/8" square by 5" long (16 mm x 16 mm x 127 mm), making them ideal for slimmer pens and small 7 mm projects where a lighter profile is preferred. The blanks shown are a representative sample. Each blank is unique and may vary slightly in colour and grain.
How do you recommend finishing these blanks?
Padauk finishes easily. Sand through progressively finer grits, then apply your preferred finish or polish. Be aware that its vibrant colour will naturally darken over time with exposure to light. A UV-resistant finish can help slow this process.
