Black Limba bottle stopper blank - 1/2" square x 2-1/2"

Black Limba is a striking African hardwood that turns easily and produces beautiful results on the lathe. With its warm golden-brown base colour and bold dark streaks, it creates bottle stoppers with a distinctive natural look. This blank is sized perfectly for bottle stopper projects, and it can also be cut down for ring blanks or other small turning projects.

Historically known as Afara or Korina, Limba has long been used in fine furniture, veneer, musical instruments and decorative woodworking. It machines cleanly with both hand and power tools, making it a pleasant wood to work with whether you’re just starting out or have years of turning experience.

What is the size of the blank?

This blank measures approximately 1-1/2" square by 2-1/2" long (38 mm square by 64 mm long), making it ideal for bottle stopper turning projects. The size also allows you to cut smaller pieces if you wish to make ring blanks or other small accessories.

The photo shown represents a typical example. Each blank is unique and will be selected at random, so grain pattern and colour may vary.

What can I make with this blank?

This blank is ideal for turning bottle stoppers, ring blanks, and other small accessories such as decorative handles or gift items. Its compact size and attractive grain make it a great choice for quick projects and craft show pieces.

How do I finish this blank?

Black Limba sands easily and finishes beautifully. After sanding through the grits, apply your preferred finish such as friction polish, oil, or cyanoacrylate glue depending on the level of gloss and durability you want.

Two fun facts about Black Limba

  • Limba is sometimes called “Korina” in the guitar world and was famously used by Gibson in the late 1950s for Flying V and Explorer electric guitars.
  • The dramatic dark streaks that give Black Limba its name occur naturally in the wood — the same tree can produce both plain Limba and the highly figured Black Limba prized by woodworkers.
