Create truly one-of-a-kind pens with these stabilized redwood burl pen blanks. Redwood burl is prized for its intricate, swirling grain and organic patterns, which are dramatically enhanced through stabilization. The resin infusion strengthens the wood while preserving its natural beauty, resulting in a blank that turns smoothly and reveals exceptional depth and character once finished.
What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures a minimum of 3/4" square by 5" long (19 mm × 19 mm × 127 mm), giving you plenty of material for most pen kits, along with extra room for shaping and trimming. The blank shown in the photo has been sanded to highlight the figure.
What does “burl” mean?
A burl is a growth that forms on a tree when it undergoes stress, injury, or infection. Instead of growing in straight grain, the wood develops in a chaotic, swirling pattern. This creates highly figured wood with unique eyes, curls, and voids — making every blank completely different.
What does “stabilized” mean?
Stabilized wood has been impregnated with resin under vacuum and pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This process produces a blank that drills cleanly, turns smoothly, and resists tear-out or blowouts. Each blank is unique and selected at random. Some variation in colour and figure is normal due to differences in how the resin is absorbed. We do not offer refunds for colour variation within a blank or for minor internal imperfections.
How should I finish this blank?
These blanks are easy to drill and turn. For best results, sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, followed by Micro Mesh. Use a cyanoacrylate glue finish followed by a plastic polish. Friction polishes like Doctor's Wood Shop, Mylands, Aussie Oil or Shellawax products will also give you a durable, high gloss finish.
