Curly wormy maple project block 1-1/2" – product of Canada

Curly maple is one of Canada’s most eye-catching hardwoods, prized for its distinctive wave-like figure that seems to ripple beneath the surface. Also known as Ambrosia Maple, this wood features dramatic streaks and colour variations caused by ambrosia beetles, giving each piece a one-of-a-kind look.

Combined with the natural character of wormy maple, these blocks offer added visual interest through small trails and markings that give each piece a unique, organic look. The “curl” in the grain creates a natural shimmer that comes alive under clear finishes, giving even simple shapes a sense of movement and depth. Smooth turning characteristics and excellent finishing qualities make curly maple a favourite for both decorative and functional projects.

What are the dimensions of these blanks?

Each project block measures approximately 1-1/2" square × 6" long (38 mm × 38 mm × 152 mm). The picture is a typical representation. Your blanks will be selected at random and may differ slightly from the image.

What projects can I make with these blanks?

These blocks are ideal for salt and pepper shaker kits, or kitchen kit handles for coffee scoop, ice cream scoop, vegetable peeler, or microplane rasp grater kits.

How should I finish curly maple?

Curly maple responds beautifully to a clear, high-gloss finish that enhances its natural chatoyance — the shimmering, three-dimensional effect in the grain. Start by sanding progressively to at least 400–600 grit. To remove swirl marks, stop the lathe between grits and sand lightly with the grain. This step makes a noticeable difference in the final clarity of the figure. Complete the process with Micro Mesh sanding up to 12,000 grit then apply a finish of your choice:

A cyanoacrylate (CA) glue finish will give you a durable, high-gloss surface that really makes the curl “pop.” Build up thin layers, sand lightly between coats if needed, then polish.

Friction polishes (such as shellac-based finishes) are quick and easy to apply and will highlight the figure nicely, though they are less durable than CA.

Oil finishes can warm up the colour and add depth, but they won’t provide as much protection or gloss on their own.

Fun facts about Curly Wormy Maple:

  • Curly Maple’s shimmering figure is caused by irregular grain growth that reflects light differently, creating its signature “chatoyance” effect.
  • Nature’s artwork: The striking streaks and discolouration are the result of ambrosia beetles boring into the wood. These natural markings make every blank a one-of-a-kind canvas.
