One of a kind: Cocobolo pen blanks – rare, highly figured.

If you’re looking for something with real character on the lathe, these cocobolo pen blanks deliver. Each piece is one of a kind — what you see is exactly what you will receive. Simply choose your favourite blank from the dropdown menu.

Cocobolo is a rare, highly figured hardwood prized for its rich colour and striking grain. Ranging from deep reddish-orange to dark brown with bold black streaks, each blank offers dramatic contrast and natural beauty that turns into a finished pen with real presence.

What size are the blanks?

Each blank measures approximately 3/4" square by 5" long (19 mm × 19 mm × 127 mm), which is the standard size for most pen turning projects. No two pieces are the same — pick the exact blank you want. What you see is what you get! Select your preferred blank from the dropdown menu above.

What makes cocobolo special?

Cocobolo is known for its density, natural oils, and exceptional figure. It turns cleanly with sharp tools and can achieve a very high natural polish. Its bold colour variation and tight grain make it a favourite for premium, heirloom-quality pens. It is a tropical hardwood from Central America and is part of the rosewood family.

Fun facts about cocobolo:

  • Freshly cut cocobolo often has a strong, spicy or floral scent — some turners compare it to cinnamon or rosewood.
  • Cocobolo can darken noticeably over time with exposure to light, often shifting from bright orange tones to deeper, richer reds and browns. A freshly turned pen won’t look exactly the same a year later — and that’s part of the appeal.
