What makes Buckeye burl special?

Buckeye burl stands out for its unpredictable figure and bold contrast. No two blanks are ever alike, making it a favourite for woodturners looking to create standout pieces. It is prized for its wild, swirling grain and dramatic colour variation, often featuring creamy yellows, smoky greys, and deep black lines. When stabilized and dyed, these natural patterns are enhanced with added strength and durability, making them a joy to turn and finish.

What does “stabilized” mean?

Stabilized wood has been infused with resin under vacuum and pressure. This process strengthens soft or highly figured wood, reduces the risk of cracking or tear-out, and improves machining and finishing performance.

How should I finish these blanks?

Stabilized Buckeye burl finishes beautifully with a variety of methods. After turning, sand through your normal grits. From there, you can apply a cyanoacrylate (CA) or friction polish finish for a high-gloss, durable surface, or sand to a very fine grit and polish using a plastic polish such as Novus or One-Step for a glass-like shine.

Fun facts about Buckeye burl:

  • Buckeye burl comes from the burl growth of the California buckeye tree, not the nut itself.
  • Its dramatic black lines are caused by natural spalting and mineral staining within the wood.
