Stock your workshop and save with this 10-pack of Canadian ash pen blanks. Known for its light cream to pale brown colour and bold, open grain, ash produces distinctive pens with plenty of natural character. These 5/8" square blanks are ideal for 7 mm pen kits and other smaller turning projects. Product of Canada.
Ash machines cleanly, turns easily with sharp tools and accepts a wide variety of finishes, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced woodturners.
What size are these pen blanks?
Each blank measures approximately 5/8" square × 5" long (16 mm × 16 mm × 127 mm), making them ideal for many 7 mm pen kits and smaller turning projects where a full 3/4" square blank isn't required.
How should I finish ash?
Ash takes a finish beautifully. For a warm, natural sheen, apply a friction polish directly on the lathe. If you're making a pen or another project that will see heavy everyday use, a cyanoacrylate (CA) glue finish like the GluBoost system provides outstanding durability and wear resistance while enhancing the wood's natural grain.
What makes ash special?
Ash is valued for its strength, excellent machining properties and bold grain pattern. The open pores create attractive texture and contrast, while the light colour makes it an excellent choice for stains, dyes or natural finishes.
Two fun facts about ash
It's the wood behind countless baseball bats. For generations, white ash has been the traditional choice for professional baseball bats because of its unique combination of strength, flexibility and shock resistance.
Its grain is easy to recognize. Ash has one of the most distinctive grain patterns of any North American hardwood, with large open pores that create bold, attractive lines in turned projects.
