Create eye-catching pens with these stabilized and dyed curly maple pen blanks. The natural curl of maple adds beautiful movement and chatoyance, while the dyed resin introduces rich, vibrant colour that carries consistently through the blank. Stabilization strengthens the wood, making these blanks reliable, predictable, and easy to drill and turn. Each blank is carefully processed for smooth, predictable results on the lathe.
What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures a minimum of 3/4" square × 5" long, providing ample material for most pen kits and allowing room for shaping and trimming during turning. The blank shown in the photo has been sanded to highlight the figure.
What does “stabilized” mean?
Stabilized refers to wood that has been impregnated with resin under pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This creates a blank that drills cleanly, turns smoothly, and resists tear-out or blowouts. Each blank is unique and will be selected at random. Some colour variability is normal due to differences in wood density and how the resin and dye are absorbed. We do not offer refunds for colour variation within a blank or for minor internal imperfections.
How should I finish these blanks?
These blanks are easy to drill and turn. For best results, sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, followed by Micro Mesh. Use a cyanoacrylate glue finish followed by a plastic polish or try the GluBoost finishing system. Friction polishes like Doctor's Wood Shop, Mylands, Aussie Oil or Shellawax products will also give you a durable, high gloss finish.
