Turn beautiful, richly colored bowls with our premium round sapele bowl turning blanks. Known for its warm reddish-brown tones and interlocked grain, sapele is a durable hardwood that works well on the lathe and finishes to a smooth, lustrous surface.
What size is the blank?
Each blank is approximately 3" thick, with diameter options available in the dropdown menu. Please allow for a tolerance of ± 1/4" on all dimensions. The wood is "skip planed", which means the wood is lightly planed to remove only the highest points, "skipping" over lower areas to create a textured, rustic surface rather than a perfectly smooth one.
The photo shown is a representative sample. Each blank is selected at random and will vary slightly in colour and grain pattern. Sapele typically features warm reddish-brown tones and may display subtle ribbon figure, especially when quartersawn.
How should I finish this blank?
Sapele finishes beautifully with a wide range of products. After sanding through your usual grits, you can apply an oil, wax, or friction polish depending on your desired look. For a higher-gloss finish, sanding to finer grits and polishing will enhance the natural depth and chatoyance of the wood.
Fun facts about sapele:
Sapele is related to mahogany and is often used as a sustainable alternative in fine furniture, guitars, and luxury car interiors.
When quartersawn, sapele can display a striking ribbon-like figure that shimmers under finish.
