What size are the blanks?
Each blank measures approximately 3/4" square by 5" long (19 mm × 19 mm × 127 mm), making them ideal for standard pen turning projects.
What makes these blanks unique?
These blanks feature curly wormy maple, known for its flowing grain and natural character, enhanced with vibrant stabilized colours. Each blank will have its own unique combination of figure and colour.
What does “stabilized” mean?
Stabilized refers to wood that has been impregnated with resin under pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This creates a blank that drills cleanly, turns smoothly, and resists tear-out or blowouts. Each blank is unique and will be selected at random. Some colour variability is normal due to differences in wood density and how the resin is absorbed. We do not offer refunds for colour variation or minor internal imperfections, which are inherent to burl wood.
What does it mean if a wood is "curly"?
“Curly” wood refers to a figure where the grain grows in a wavy, undulating pattern instead of straight lines. This creates a distinctive light-and-dark striping effect and a shimmering, three-dimensional look that changes as the piece is moved under light. It’s a natural variation in the wood’s growth and is prized by woodworkers and turners for the depth, movement and visual interest it adds to finished projects.
How should I finish these blanks?
These blanks are easy to drill and turn. For best results, sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, followed by Micro Mesh. Use a cyanoacrylate glue finish followed by a plastic polish. Friction polishes like Doctor's Wood Shop, Mylands, Aussie Oil or Shellawax products will also give you a durable, high gloss finish.
Two fun facts about Wormy Maple:
Nature’s artwork: The striking streaks and discolouration are the result of ambrosia beetles boring into the wood. These natural markings make every blank a one-of-a-kind canvas.
Strength with character: Despite its “wormy” appearance, Ambrosia Maple retains the strength and durability of maple, making it a reliable hardwood for turning projects with added visual flair.
