This listing is for the exact lot of 4 Stabilized Spalted Maple Burl pen blanks shown in the photos. You will receive the blanks pictured.
Each blank measures approximately 3/4" square × 5" long (19 mm × 19 mm × 127 mm), making them suitable for most standard pen turning projects.
Stabilized wood has been impregnated with resin under vacuum and pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas of the wood. This creates a stronger, more consistent blank that machines cleanly and is less prone to tear-out while turning.
Burl is a rare, abnormal growth that forms on a tree in response to stress, injury, or disease. Instead of straight grain, burl produces tight swirls, eyes, and complex figure, making it highly prized for decorative woodworking and premium turned objects like pens.
Spalting describes natural markings created when fungi begin to break down wood fibres. In maple burl, this process can create dark lines, zones, and colour variations that trace through the grain, adding contrast and unique character.
You will receive the exact 4 blanks shown in the photos.
Natural variations in colour, grain, burl figure, spalting, and resin absorption are normal and contribute to the uniqueness of each blank.
Small natural voids or internal imperfections may occur due to the nature of burl wood.
