What is the minimum blank size I need to make this kit?

You will need a pen blank at least 3/4" square × 5" long to allow enough material for turning and trimming.

What refill do I need for this kit?

This kit includes a black Schmidt-style rollerball refill, known for its smooth ink flow and premium writing performance. Replacement refills are widely available in various colours and tip sizes.
