Build a truly one-of-a-kind knife handle with this stabilized redwood burl knife block. Known for its intricate swirling grain, eyes, and organic patterns, redwood burl delivers exceptional visual depth that comes to life once shaped and finished. Stabilization enhances both durability and workability, making this an excellent choice for custom knife projects.
What is burl?
Burl is a natural growth that forms on a tree due to stress, injury, or environmental factors. Instead of straight grain, the wood develops in a chaotic, swirling pattern filled with eyes, curls, and unique figure. This makes every block completely different and highly sought after for decorative projects.
What does “stabilized” mean?
Stabilized refers to wood that has been impregnated with resin under pressure. This process reinforces softer or highly figured areas, filling microscopic voids and strengthening the wood from the inside out. Because resin and dye absorption varies with wood density, some colour variation within a block is normal. Minor internal imperfections are also a natural part of working with real wood. For these reasons, we do not offer refunds for colour variation or slight internal imperfections.
What is the size of these blocks?
Each knife block measures approximately 1" × 2" × 5" (25 mm × 51 mm × 127 mm). This size is ideal for a wide range of knife handle styles, giving you enough material for shaping, contouring, and final fitting. The photo shown is a representative sample only. Blocks are selected at random. Colour and figure will vary from piece to piece.
What makes redwood burl a good choice for knife handles?
Redwood burl combines striking figure with lightweight strength. Once stabilized, it machines cleanly, sands smoothly, and finishes beautifully, making it well-suited for detailed shaping and ergonomic handle designs.
