Kingwood knife block 1" × 2" × 5"

Make refined, heirloom-quality knife handles with these kingwood knife blocks. Kingwood is a rare and exotic rosewood from Brazil, prized for its deep purple-brown tones and bold dark streaks. Each block features a fine, uniform texture and a natural luster that often looks nearly polished before sanding even begins. Dense, durable, and naturally decay resistant, kingwood is the hardest member of the rosewood family and a favourite among makers who love achieving a smooth, glass-like finish.

Each block is unique. Colour, streaking, and figure will vary from piece to piece depending on grain structure and wood density. The block shown in photos has been sanded to reveal the figure and is representative only. Your blocks will be selected at random.

What makes kingwood special?

Kingwood’s exceptional density and fine, even grain allow it to machine cleanly and hold crisp detail when worked with sharp tools. Its natural oils and tight structure give it excellent durability and a rich surface sheen that continues to deepen over time, making it especially well suited for premium knife handles and other high-wear applications.

What is the size of this block?

Each knife block measures approximately 1" × 2" × 5". This versatile size is ideal for a wide range of knife handle styles, providing ample material for shaping, contouring, and final fitting. The photo shown is a representative sample only. Blocks are selected at random and will vary in colour and figure. No refunds for colour variation or minor internal imperfections.

Two fun facts about kingwood

  • Kingwood earned its name because it was historically reserved for royalty, commonly used in fine furniture and decorative inlays for French kings during the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • Despite being extremely dense, kingwood turns beautifully with sharp tools, revealing a smooth, satiny sheen that develops into a glass-like finish and becomes richer with age.
