Kingwood is one of the world's most prized exotic hardwoods, admired for its rich purple-brown colour accented by dramatic black streaks and its naturally high lustre. Dense, fine-textured and exceptionally elegant, it has long been a favourite for premium woodturning projects where beauty and durability are equally important.

What size are the blanks?

Each blank measures a minimum of 3/4" x 3/4" x 3-1/4" long (19 mm x 19 mm x 83 mm), making them ideal for projects such as ornaments, key rings, bottle stoppers, pendants and other small turnings.

The blanks shown in the photo have been sanded to highlight the grain and are representative only. Your blanks will be selected at random and will vary in colour, grain pattern and striping, ensuring every project is one of a kind.

Is Kingwood easy to turn?

Yes. Kingwood turns exceptionally well and produces crisp details with a naturally smooth surface. Because it is an extremely dense hardwood, sharp tools and light cuts are recommended. It sands beautifully and takes on a spectacular natural polish with very little effort.

How should I finish these blanks?

For the best finish, sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, followed by Micro Mesh. A cyanoacrylate (CA) glue finish will produce a durable, high-gloss surface that enhances the wood's rich colour and striking contrast. Friction polishes such as Doctor's Wood Shop, Mylands, Aussie Oil or Shellawax products also produce an attractive, durable finish.

Two fun facts about Kingwood

• Kingwood was once known as "the wood of kings." It was a favourite of French royalty, including Louis XIV and Louis XV, and was used extensively for luxurious furniture, marquetry and decorative inlay. In the 17th century, it was considered one of the most valuable furniture woods in Europe.
• Despite its luxurious appearance, Kingwood comes from a relatively small tree native to Brazil. Because large boards are uncommon, it has traditionally been reserved for small, high-value items such as fine turnings, musical instruments, cue-making and decorative inlays.
