Make your own custom salt or pepper mill with the CrushGrind 25 Original ceramic grinder mechanism. Designed in Denmark, this premium grinding mechanism features durable ceramic components, smooth grinding performance and a 25-year manufacturer's warranty on the ceramic parts.
The adjustable 260 mm (10.2") shaft can be cut to length, allowing you to create a custom mill approximately 5" to 12" (127 to 305 mm) tall. Unlike traditional grinder mechanisms with an adjustment knob on top, CrushGrind features a grind adjustment wheel at the bottom, giving you more flexibility when designing your mill. The ceramic mechanism won't rust or corrode, making it suitable for grinding both salt and pepper. Installation requires no screws.
What does the kit include?
This kit includes one CrushGrind 25 Original ceramic grinding mechanism with a 260 mm (10.2") shaft that can be cut to your desired length. The mechanism includes a bottom-mounted adjustment wheel for controlling the coarseness of the grind. The wooden mill body, turning blank and installation tools are not included.
What tooling do I need to make this project?
To make this kit, you will need (all sold separately):
Forstner drill bits: 7/8”, 1-1/16”, 1-1/2”, 1-3/4”
This is a woodworking project that requires turning, drilling, finishing and assembly with proper equipment. You will not receive a finished grinder.
What size blank do I need to make this kit?
Select a woodturning blank that measures at least 2-3/4" square (70 × 70 mm). The blank should be approximately 1" (25 mm) longer than the mechanism length you have selected to allow sufficient material for turning and finishing. The adjustable 260 mm (10.2") shaft allows you to create mills approximately 5" to 12" (127 to 305 mm) tall.

How do I adjust the grind?
The CrushGrind 25 Original features an adjustment wheel at the bottom of the mechanism, rather than on top of the mill. This design allows you to adjust the grind without an external adjustment knob on top of your finished mill. Turn clockwise for a finer grind. Turn anticlockwise for a coarser grind.
How do I refill the mill?
Simply pull the top of the mill upwards to access the filling chamber. Add your salt, pepper or other suitable dry spices, then replace the top.
How do I clean the ceramic grinding mechanism?
The CrushGrind ceramic mechanism can be cleaned to remove accumulated spice residue. Unscrew the adjustment wheel at the bottom of the mechanism. Remove the ceramic cone. Use a stiff brush to clean the grinding surfaces and ceramic cone. If necessary, soak the ceramic cone in warm water to help dissolve stubborn residue. Allow all ceramic components to dry completely for at least 24 hours before reassembling and using the grinder. If you want to change the type of spice in your mill, CrushGrind recommends grinding some coarse salt through the mechanism to help remove remaining spice residue.
