With its warm golden-brown colour, dramatic dark striping and occasional ribbon figure, African Beli is a striking hardwood that produces elegant, one-of-a-kind pens. Sometimes called "African Zebrawood" because of its bold contrasting grain, Beli offers a distinctive look while remaining a pleasure to turn.
Beli machines cleanly with sharp tools, sands easily to a silky-smooth surface and accepts a wide range of finishes, making it an excellent choice for both beginning and experienced pen turners.
What size are these pen blanks?
Each blank measures approximately 3/4" square x 5" long (19 mm x 19 mm x 127 mm), making it suitable for most pen kits.
How should I finish African Beli?
Beli takes a finish beautifully. For a warm, natural sheen, apply a friction polish directly on the lathe. If you're making a pen or another project that will see heavy everyday use, a cyanoacrylate (CA) glue finish provides superior durability and wear resistance while highlighting the wood's rich colour and figure.
What makes African Beli special?
The interlocked grain often creates attractive ribbon stripes or subtle curly figure, so every blank has its own unique character. Its combination of density, stability and excellent workability makes it a favourite for fine turning projects.
