Popular wood finish sample bundle – 3 friction polish favourites

Not sure which finish you’ll like best? This three-piece sample bundle lets you try three of the most popular friction polishes used by woodturners — perfect for pens, small kitchen projects, ornaments, and other small turnings.

Each bundle includes convenient sample sizes so you can test application, sheen, and durability before committing to full-size bottles. This bundle is a practical way to compare gloss level, feel, clarity, and water resistance — and to find your go-to finish for future projects.

What’s included in this bundle?

  • 1x 60 mL/2 oz bottle of Mylands High-Build Friction Polish
  • 1x 60 mL/2 oz bottle of Doctor’s Woodshop Pens Plus Finish
  • 1x 30 mL/1 oz bottle of Shellawax Liquid Friction Polish

What makes each finish unique?

Mylands High-Build Friction Polish (UK-made) is a shellac-based formula designed specifically for lathe use. It builds quickly into a durable, mirror-like gloss and often doesn’t require a separate sealer coat. Ideal for pens, small boxes, and decorative turnings where you want fast, professional results.

Doctor’s Woodshop Pens Plus is a one-step friction polish formulated with walnut oil, shellac, and micro-aggregated microcrystal wax (Cosmolloid 80H). Friction heat drives the oil into the wood, sets the shellac, and melts the wax to create a hard, water-resistant surface. Excellent for pens, peppermills, pizza cutters, and other small kitchen projects (not recommended for salad bowls). Cannot be shipped by air — please select ground shipping.

Shellawax Liquid (product of Australia) is a trusted, traditional friction polish loved by woodturners worldwide. It produces a warm, high-gloss finish in minutes and is especially well-suited to pens and other small turnings.

How do I apply these finishes?

All three are designed for friction polishing on the lathe. Apply at low speed using a lint-free cloth, allow brief drying, then buff with a clean cloth. Friction from the rotating workpiece accelerates drying and builds shine quickly.
