Stabilized and dyed veined curly maple knife blocks 1" × 2" × 5" - product of Canada

Create striking, one-of-a-kind knife handles with these stabilized and dyed veined curly maple knife blocks. Made from Canadian curly maple and professionally stabilized, these blocks combine natural character with added strength and reliability for demanding knife-making projects. The stabilization and dye process highlights the wood’s internal structure, revealing dramatic veining that gives each block depth, movement, and visual interest.

Each block is unique. Colour intensity and pattern will vary from piece to piece depending on grain structure and wood density. The block shown in photos has been sanded to reveal the figure and is representative only. Your blanks will be selected at random.

What does “veined” mean and how does this tell the story of the tree this block used to be?

The “veins” you see are the wood’s natural vessels (pores) — tiny tubes that once carried sap through the tree. Maple is a diffuse-porous hardwood, meaning these vessels are very small and evenly distributed, making them difficult to see in untreated wood. During the stabilization and dye process, resin and dye penetrate these vessels and surrounding structure, bringing them visually forward. This creates the distinctive veined appearance that adds contrast and depth. The dramatic look of each block represents the history of the live tree it used to be.

What does “stabilized” mean?

Stabilized refers to wood that has been impregnated with resin under pressure. This process reinforces softer or highly figured areas, filling microscopic voids and strengthening the wood from the inside out. Because resin and dye absorption varies with wood density, some colour variation within a blank is normal. Minor internal imperfections are also a natural part of working with real wood. For these reasons, we do not offer refunds for colour variation or slight internal imperfections.

What is the size of these blanks?

Each knife block measures approximately 1" × 2" × 5". This size is ideal for a wide range of knife handle styles, giving you enough material for shaping, contouring, and final fitting. The photo shown is a representative sample only. Blanks are selected at random. Colour and figure will vary from piece to piece. No refunds for colour variation or minor internal imperfections.
