Stabilized and dyed maple burl knife block

Add dramatic figure and vibrant colour to your next knife handle or small turning project with these stabilized and dyed maple burl knife blocks. Maple burl is prized for its swirling grain, eyes, and unique natural character, while the stabilization process improves strength, machinability, and finishing performance. Product of Canada.

What size are these blocks?

Each block measures approximately 1" × 2" × 5" (25 mm × 51 mm × 127 mm). The block shown is representative only. Each piece is selected at random and will vary in grain pattern, figure, and colour due to the natural characteristics of burl wood. Some colour variation within the block is also normal. Different wood densities absorb resin and dye differently during the stabilization process, which creates unique colour shifts and patterns from one block to another.

Please note that slight internal imperfections and natural variation are part of the material and are not considered defects.

What does “stabilized” mean?

Stabilized refers to wood that has been impregnated with resin under pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This creates a blank that drills cleanly, turns smoothly, and resists tear-out or blowouts. Each blank is unique and will be selected at random. Some colour variability is normal due to differences in wood density and how the resin is absorbed. We do not offer refunds for colour variation or minor internal imperfections, which are inherent to burl wood.

What is burl?

Burl is a rare, abnormal growth that forms on a tree in response to stress, injury, or disease. Instead of straight grain, burl produces tight swirls, eyes, and complex figure, making it highly prized for high-end furniture, decorative inlay, and premium turned objects like pens.

What can these blocks be used for? These blocks are ideal for knife handles, bottle stoppers, small tool handles, and other compact turning or woodworking projects where dramatic figure and colour are desired.
