This blank is ideal for a wide range of turning projects including knife handles, bottle stoppers, shaving brushes, ice cream scoops and other kitchen or specialty items.

What tips will help me get the best results?

Here are a few tips we use in our shop to create a great-looking project every time:

• Paint the brass tube and the inside of the blank to prevent the tube from showing through. Enamel paint works well. Once dry, test fit the tube before gluing.

• Turn at a high speed (3,000 RPM or higher) using sharp tools and light cuts.

• Consider using a negative rake carbide cutter to reduce chipping and catches.

How should I finish this blank for best results? 

Sand to 600 grit using sandpaper or sanding mesh. Between grits, stop the lathe and sand by hand in the opposite direction to reduce swirl marks. Wet sand with Micro Mesh from 1,500 to 12,000 grit. As a dust-free alternative, try an abrasive paste such as Superior Grit. Finish with a plastic polish like Novus or One-Step at low lathe speed for a smooth, high-gloss finish.
