Fusion hybrid stabilized burl and acrylic pen blanks – made in Canada

Create truly one-of-a-kind pens with these Fusion hybrid pen blanks. Each blank combines stabilized natural maple burl wood with vibrant acrylic, producing a bold contrast of organic figure and colour. Handcrafted in Guelph, Ontario, these blanks are designed to stand out and bring a premium look to your finished pens.

What size are the blanks?

Each blank measures a minimum of 3/4" square by 5" long (19 mm × 19 mm × 127 mm), providing enough material for most pen kits with room for shaping and trimming.

What makes Fusion hybrid blanks unique?

These blanks blend two very different materials — stabilized burl and acrylic — into a single piece. The burl adds natural figure and character, while the acrylic introduces vibrant colour and contrast. No two blanks are alike, making each finished pen completely unique.

What does “stabilized” mean?

Stabilized wood has been impregnated with resin under vacuum and pressure, reinforcing softer or highly figured areas and eliminating weak spots. This results in a blank that turns more predictably, drills cleanly, and resists tear-out or blowouts.

How should I turn these blanks?

For best results, use sharp tools such as a round carbide cutter. Take light cuts to reduce the risk of chipping, especially at the transition between wood and acrylic. Fully cover your pen tube in glue before inserting to ensure a solid bond.

How should I finish these blanks?

Finish these like an acrylic. Sand progressively using Abranet or sanding mesh, then refine with Micro Mesh. When sanding acrylic areas, wet sanding is recommended to avoid scratches. Complete the finish with a plastic polish like Novus or One-Step for a smooth, high-gloss result.

Please note: blanks shown are representative only. Due to the natural characteristics of burl, each blank will vary in colour, grain, and acrylic pattern. Variability is part of the beauty of handcrafted materials. We do not replace blanks damaged during the turning process.

Pro tips for turning success:

  • Use razor-sharp tools — we recommend a round carbide cutter
  • Take light cuts to reduce the risk of blowouts
  • Fully cover your pen tube in glue before inserting
  • Paint both the brass tube and inside of the drilled hole to avoid show-through (enamel paint recommended)
  • Finish like a wood blank; if using Micro Mesh, wet sand to avoid scratches in acrylic
  • Small natural voids may occur — fill with thick CA glue as needed

Can I mix and match these blanks for volume discounts?

Yes! You can mix and match these with other Fusion hybrid, Pearlux, glitter, coffee bean, and Canadian Flag pen blanks to qualify for volume pricing discounts.
