Special edition Fusion Hybrid pen blank – Canadian Eh?

Celebrate Canada in style with this special edition Fusion Hybrid pen blank, handcrafted in Guelph, Ontario. Each blank fuses stabilized, dyed red Canadian maple with vibrant acrylic for a bold and patriotic look. Made in Canada.

What are the dimensions of this pen blank?

The dimensions are a minimum of 3/4" × 3/4" × 5". Blanks in the photos are representative only. Each blank is handcrafted, inspected for quality, and unique. No replacements are offered for blanks damaged during cutting, drilling, trimming, turning, finishing, or assembly.

What is this blank made of?

This blank is made of wood fused with acrylic. It is handcrafted; each blank is unique, with natural variation in colour and pattern.

The red wood is Canadian Maple that has been stabilized and dyed red. Because wood is a natural product, there will be variations in how the wood absorbs the dye and the stabilizing resin so you may see small natural coloured spots or grain lines in the red wood pieces. This is part of the natural beauty of the wood and is not considered a defect.

How should I finish this blank?

Finish Fusion hybrid blanks the same way you would an acrylic. Start with the lowest grit of Abranet mesh and work your way up to the highest. Use light pressure and let the mesh do the work. Move the sheet around to different areas as you go to prevent heat. Follow this with successive grits of Micro Mesh; we recommend wet sanding, which will create a slurry that is perfect for getting a flawless finish and avoiding fine scratches in the acrylic. Then finish with a plastic polish of your choice.

Small voids may occur while turning — these are not defects and can be easily filled with a drop of thick cyanoacrylate glue.

Pro tips for best results:

  • Use razor-sharp tools and take very light cuts to prevent blowouts.

  • Fully cover the pen tube in glue before inserting it into the blank — any missed spot can cause failure near the end of turning.

  • Paint both the brass tube and the inside of the drilled hole before gluing. This prevents brass from showing through and allows you to adjust the final colour tone. Durable enamel paints from hobby stores work well.
