Fusion hybrid project block 2" × 2" × 5-1/2" – product of Canada

Handcrafted by our artisan team, these Fusion hybrid project blocks combine stabilized burl with vibrant acrylic for bold colour, dramatic contrast, and excellent durability on the lathe. Each block is completely unique, with the natural character of burl seamlessly fused to acrylic for striking one-of-a-kind results. They are sized specifically for small turning projects that demand both visual impact and strength.

What is a Fusion / hybrid blank?

A Fusion (or hybrid) blank is made by combining stabilized natural wood — often highly figured burl — with acrylic resin. The resin fills voids and surrounds the wood, reinforcing weak areas while adding colour and contrast. The result is a dense, stable material that turns smoothly and produces eye-catching finished pieces.

What is the size of this block?

Each block measures a minimum of 2" × 2" × 5-1/2". Because these are handcrafted, dimensions and patterns may vary slightly, and every block is truly one of a kind. These blanks are handcrafted and carefully inspected for quality. No replacements are offered for blanks damaged during cutting, drilling, trimming, turning, finishing, or assembly. The blanks in the photograph are representative only and the blanks you receive may differ slightly from the image. Burl is a natural product and variability in colour and pattern is natural and to be expected.

What projects can I make with this size of block?

This versatile size is ideal for shorter peppermills or thicker handle projects, bottle stoppers, ornaments, shaving brushes, and cutting your own ring blanks. It’s a great choice for projects where bold colour, contrast, and durability matter.

What finish should I use on this block?

Finish Fusion hybrid blanks the same way you would an acrylic. Start with the lowest grit of Abranet mesh and work your way up to the highest. Use light pressure and let the mesh do the work. Move the sheet around to different areas as you go to prevent heat. Follow this with successive grits of Micro Mesh; we recommend wet sanding, which will create a slurry that is perfect for getting a flawless finish and avoiding fine scratches in the acrylic. Then finish with a plastic polish of your choice.

What else do I need to know?

Use razor-sharp tools and take very light cuts to reduce the risk of blowouts. Small voids may appear during turning; these are normal and can be easily filled with thick cyanoacrylate glue before final sanding and polishing and are not considered defects.
