Turn a distinctive writing instrument with an authentic piece of shooting history. This .50 caliber bullet cartridge pen kit includes a genuine once-fired brass cartridge that forms the lower portion of the finished pen, paired with a turned upper section that you can customize with your choice of wood or resin.
The kit includes one 7 mm brass tube and a Cross-style ballpoint refill. Because the cartridge has actually been fired, each one has its own character, making every finished pen a little different.
What tooling do I need to make this kit?
To make this kit, you will need the following items (all sold separately):
This is a woodworking turning project that requires drilling, turning, sanding, finishing and assembly using standard woodworking tools and equipment. You are purchasing the kit components, not a finished pen.
What size blank do I need?
The turned section can be customized from approximately 1-1/8" to 2" long (29 mm to 51 mm), allowing you to change the proportions and appearance of the finished pen. The overall finished pen measures approximately 5-1/2" to 6-3/8" long (140 mm to 162 mm), depending on the length of the turned section.
Is this a real .50 caliber cartridge?
Yes. The brass cartridge included with this kit is an authentic, once-fired .50 caliber cartridge. Because it has been fired and used, expect some tarnish, marks, scratches or small dings. These are normal characteristics of a genuine once-fired cartridge and are not considered defects.
What refill does this pen use?
The kit includes a Cross-style ballpoint ink refill. Compatible Cross-style replacement refills can be used when the original refill runs out.
What is the history of the .50 caliber cartridge?
The .50 BMG cartridge was developed for the Browning M2 machine gun around the end of the First World War and entered U.S. military service in the early 1920s. It has since become one of the most recognizable large-calibre military cartridges. Combined with the authentic once-fired brass cartridge, this history makes the finished pen an interesting gift for military history enthusiasts, shooting sports enthusiasts and outdoorspeople.
