Red Oak spindle turning blanks – product of Canada
Red oak is a popular turning material thanks to its strength, stability, and clearly defined grain that shows beautifully under a finish. It cuts cleanly with sharp tools, sands easily, and accepts stain exceptionally well, making it a reliable choice for both beginner and experienced turners.
What are the dimensions of these spindles?
Each blank measures approximately 2-1/2" square × 10" long. Each piece is unique and will differ slightly from the image shown. The wood is skip planed, meaning only the high points have been lightly planed, leaving a natural, textured surface that’s ideal for turning.
What projects can I make with these spindles?
Ideal for bottle stoppers, pizza cutter and ice cream scoop handles, and some styles of pepper grinders.
Fun facts about red oak:
Red oak was a key material in early North American architecture, wideely used for floors, beams, and cabinetry in early colonial homes because it was strong, plentiful, and easy to work with. Many historic buildings across the U.S. and Canada still showcase original red oak floors that are over 150 years old.
Red oak has uniquely open pores that you can see with the naked eye and form beautiful, striking grain patterns. These pores are also why red oak takes stain extremely well — and why air blown through one end of a red oak board can literally come out the other end!
