Knife scales - Black and red linen single ply Micarta 3/8 x 1-1/2 x 10". Alternating layers of black and red linen Micarta. Each layer is 1/32" thick.

Micarta is a phenolic knife handle material made by Norplex in the USA, the original makers of phenolic handle material and well known for their quality. Micarta is made with epoxy or resin layered with some other material, like linen, paper, canvas, etc. The layers are compressed under immense pressure and heat to form a solid finished product.

Micarta is extremely durable and lightweight and easy to work with, making it a wonderful knife handle material. It will not expand and contract with heat or humidity the way wood can and does not need to be oiled or otherwise particularly cared for to maintain its look. Avoid building up too much heat when working with Micarta as this can cause the resin to start melting and gum up your sanding belt or sandpaper. Dip the Micarta in water or slow down to prevent heat build up.
