Aluminium composite segmenting panel. 3 mm/0.118" thick. Each panel measures 152.4 mm x 304.8 mm / 6" x 12". Polyethylene interior.

Ideal for segmenting accents in pen blanks, project blocks or knife handles.

Tips for using it to make your own segmented blanks:

  • Peel off the clear plastic film that is on each side of the segmenting material before starting your project.
  • Scuff up each surface that you're segmenting together with sandpaper to create a stronger bond (each side of the segmenting material as well as the other blank pieces).
  • Clean the segments after sanding to get rid of dust and debris.
  • Verify that each segment has square corners. You can use a square, such as a carpenter's square or a drafting triangle, to check the angles. Place the square against the edges of the segment to confirm that they form a perfect 90-degree angle. Adjust any segments that are not square by trimming or sanding them until they meet the desired squareness.
  • Before gluing the segments together, ensure that the mating surfaces are clean and free from debris. Sand the edges of each segment to ensure they are smooth and flat. A clean and well-prepared surface will help create stronger bonds during the gluing process.
  • Use a strong glue to bond your pieces together, like a two-part epoxy that gives you some extra working time to make sure everything is in place nicely.
  • When drilling your segmented blank or squaring the ends off with a pen mill, use a scrap blank under the blank to help support it and relieve pressure. This helps prevent blowing out the end of the blank when drilling or squaring.
  • Once the blank is glued and cured, mount it securely on the lathe and turn it carefully. Take light cuts and check your progress frequently to achieve the desired shape. Avoid applying excessive pressure, which could cause the segments to shift or the glue joints to fail.
